Actor Chris Colfer is making it a point to prove that he is more than “that gay kid on Glee.”
This summer, Colfer has planned (and began) a national book tour, through which he will be promoting his children’s novel, The Land of Stories. The novel, which releases July 17, has been described as a “modern day fairy-tale” that takes twins Alex and Conner into the lands of fairy tales that they grew up reading about. However, the two must face witches, wolves, and other magical antagonists in order to find their way home. Colfer has stated that the idea for the novel started when he was 10 years old, after being read to by his mother before bedtime.
Additionally, Colfer’s upcoming screenplay debut, Struck By Lightning, releases later on this year. The film premiered at Tribeca Film Festival this year to positive reviews, and is highly anticipated by Glee and Colfer fans alike. This movie not only is Colfer’s scriptwriting debut, but his first major role outside of Kurt Hummel since Glee began. The teen comedy is a coming of age story, that tells the tale of Carson Phillips, an unpopular, yet ambitious high school journalist who dies after being struck by lightning. While Colfer insists that the film is not meant to be autobiographical, he admits that some plot points may or may not have happened in his life. Said Colfer on the film,
“One of the biggest things I wanted to do is have a character call these people out on their fake grief and mourning. I mean, how many times are we at someone’s funeral and someone speaks at the podium, and we think, ‘Oh my God, they’re such a liar, they never knew them like I knew them, they weren’t as close as they’re saying they are.’ I think one of my character’s lines in the movie is, ‘It’s amazing how popular you become once you die.’ I just thought it’d be a great way to tell a story, from the perspective of being dead.” [x]
The film will be released later on this year, in both movie theaters and through On-Demand and instant video formats.
Other than these two projects, Colfer has said that he is looking to begin another screenplay soon, and possibly a directorial debut as well. As for Glee, he has been confirmed to be returning to the show, which returns this September.
